This is Matakawau village nestling around our school
Not very large, but like most smaller New Zealand communities, Matakawau village is the hub of the Awhitu District.
The view north towards Manukau Heads and the beautiful beaches and bays.
The new community hall which is fully utilised for most of the week. The school uses the hall frequently for concerts, dancing and visiting educational entertainers.

"Don't go past the orange store," is the usual directions for getting to the village.

Our store was featured in the movie - 'The Price of Milk'.

Two very popular members of the district - from the foodmarket - Jeram & Laxmi Bhana - also starred in the movie.
Where would any country community be without its garage and petrol supplies.
One of several churches in the Awhitu district - this is the Catholic Church - situated in the village itself.
A very popular spot for tourists visiting our village - the Bush Reserve - with its handsome stands of Kauri trees.
The resident turkey family. Often found holding up traffic on the main road or strolling through the school grounds showing of the new youngsters to the delighted pupils
