It all started when Kate Smallman of the Diabetes Projects Trust visited the school to talk to the year 5 & 6 students about diabetes awareness and healthy lifestyles.
To find out how much the children learn from talks like these, Novo Nordisk ran a competition amongst all schools visited in Australasia. The students could chose any medium they liked and it says a lot for their teachers, Hazel MacMahon and Toni Ristic that these children were encouraged to use their imagination which is how they chose to write, perform and edit their very own pop video.
Novo Nordisk, a leading drug company specialising in treating diabetes, was so impressed by the Awhitu students efforts that they not only gave them first prize, NZ$4743.26 but sent the video over their internal TV system to every office they have in the world. So as Alison Beaufoy, Novo Nordisk Sales Director, told the assembled children when she presented the cheque."Your rap video has been seen as far away as Denmark, UK, India, China in fact all over the world. You have really put Awhitu on the map!"
.

This is the entire school, with year 5 & 6 in front, listenning to Alison

And now for the important bit as Sean Johannsen gets his hands on the cheque.

Room One spent some of the money on taking the whole class on an overnight camp at Auckland Zoo, they provided tee-shirts and paints for everyone in the school to make their own artistic clothing and some of it making a healthy lunch for everyone in the school.
