Howick Historical Village School Trip

All classes at Awhitu District School have been studying the ‘olden days’ as their Social Science unit this term. So, at lunch time, we now have children playing hopscotch instead of skateboarding and trying to master ‘Little Jingles’ or ‘In and Out the Stable’ with that wonderful old game of  knuckle-bones.

One of the major activities during the study involved an adventure-filled day at Howick Historical Village to get some first hand experience of what life was really like for families in those times. Most of the children dressed appropriately for the occasion and each group of children in turn discovered what a typical school day was like, some of the many chores the children had to do, what toys they had, what happened in the village courthouse and in general how hard life was for the new settlers. There was also time for the children to explore the village itself - visiting the different types of houses, shacks and huts. Also interesting to explore were the local pub, charcoal-maker, blacksmith, flour mill and general store. The ‘teachers’ at the village certainly made it a fun day out as well as a great learning experience. You can bet a lot of the children from Awhitu will be returning with their families in the near future.
